The upcoming presidential debates are an important opportunity
to return the media's attention to a frank discussion of real
issues. But even now the campaigns are hedging
(http://www.mediafordemocracy.us/ct/cp_Xb3p1Zd-5/), trying to
control the format of the debates to avoid difficult questions
on the many challenges we face as a nation. That's why it's
crucial that Americans' concerns be put before the debate
organizers, now.
The candidates have agreed to three presidential debates; the
first will occur on September 30 in Florida. It will be
moderated by Jim Lehrer of the PBS NewsHour. Subsequent debates
will be moderated by Charles Gibson of ABC News (October 8) and
Bob Schieffer of CBS' Face the Nation (October 13).
ASK THE CANDIDATES
Now's the time to put your concerns before the candidates.
What questions do you want President Bush and Senator Kerry to
answer? Write them in the form below and send them in. (If you
prefer, you can also send questions via email to
debates@mediachannel.org). Next week, we will hand all of your
questions to Lehrer, Gibson and Schieffer as a grassroots guide
to the questions they need to pose.
Remember to keep your questions brief, courteous and to the
point.
Thank you for staking your claim to a better media in 2004,
The Media for Democracy Team
