A Progressive Position on Immigration: Build a Fence -- And Amnesty

Sun Mar 26, 2006 at 07:40:32 AM PDT

At last an economist who states a comprehensive and comprehensible position on immigration control which Progressives could and should and support and endorse.

This is Robert J. Samuelson's plan, Build a Fence -- And Amnesty. Excerpts with added boldfacing below:

Two archetypes of demagoguery: Bush and Lieberman

Sun Mar 19, 2006 at 09:58:39 AM PDT

There are two kinds of people who cannot be counted on to lead us out of the wilderness of the Iraqi desert: George W. Bush and Joe Lieberman.

Bush's Rationale #35 for Diverting the GWOT Into Iraq?

Fri Mar 17, 2006 at 07:34:21 AM PDT

In Section V of the White House's
National Security Strategy of the United States (March, 2006),
we find what might be rational #35 for diverting the global war on world terror into Iraq:
This Administration inherited an Iraq threat that was unresolved.....

For America, the September 11 attacks underscored the danger of allowing threats to linger unresolved. Saddam Hussein's continued defiance of 16 UNSC resolutions over 12 years, combined with his record of invading neighboring countries, supporting terrorists, tyrannizing his own people, and using chemical weapons, presented a threat we could no longer ignore.

Maybe it's number 36. (Someone else must have added them up by now.)

Are We Witnessing The Tipping Point In Iraq? (Poll)

Sat Mar 04, 2006 at 08:18:22 AM PDT

Yesterday, Tom Friedman asked The Big Question:
Since the start of the Iraq war, it's been clear that "victory" rested on the answer to one Big Question: Was Iraq the way Iraq was because Saddam was the way Saddam was, or was Saddam the way Saddam was because Iraq was the way Iraq was -- a country congenitally divided among Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds that can be held together only by an iron fist.

DeLayed Challenge to All DKos Members of Congress

Sat Oct 15, 2005 at 05:20:27 PM PDT

DeLay is not even down, and many Liberals are counting him out. There is even some gloating going on.

We don't want to see some formulaic Hollywood ending happen where the serial killer - wounded and bleeding, pulls a pistol out of his sock and springs back to life with five minutes left in the feature.

I say to you: Tom DeLay's political obituaries are premature.

Ronnie Earle's indictments are obviously not enough to kill this reptile.

Where as the typical liberal may be inclined to sit complacently back and let Texas courts have their way with DeLay, I am saying that's courting the still possible disaster of The Hammer's recovery.

DeLay's demise would be better assured if he were ganged-up on.

I am challenging any so-called liberal member(s) of Congress to prove themselves to be true Progressives, to put their signature(s) where their mouth(s) have been, and sign an outstanding citizen complaint.

The Incomplete Religious Conversion of David Brooks

Thu Sep 29, 2005 at 10:14:04 AM PDT

David Brooks, to some, has caught religion. I'm not convinced. His conversion is incomplete. He has caught on and fessed-up somewhat, however. Today, in The Designated Hitter, he says,
Politics is a team sport. Nobody can get anything done alone. But in today's Washington, loyalty to the team displaces loyalty to the truth. Loyalty to the team explains why President Bush doesn't fire people who serve him poorly, and why, as a result, his policies are often not well executed.
And then, in an effort to achieve some kind of Byzantine symmetry, he says that Howard Dean is merely the Democratic equivalent to Tom DeLay.

Say whatever you want about Brooks, he's not stupid. So at the end of the day, if it seems he just doesn't get it, it must be because he's been bought.

George Galloway: Authentic Loyal Opposition

Thu Aug 25, 2005 at 08:44:27 AM PDT

Want to hear what a real legislative member of a real loyal opposition sounds like?

We don't have any examples here, so it might be interesting.

British MP George Galloway has announced his U.S. speaking tour in the United States. He's the guy who faced down his accusers in the U.S. Congress on May 17th. Idiot Congressman Norm Coleman had accused Galloway of profiteering in the Oil for Food program.

Bad idea.

Bush Can Take the 5th Amendment on Iraq

Sun Jun 26, 2005 at 08:05:56 AM PDT

Checkout Kelo v. City of New London.

Bushco has done nothing more than taking Iraq by exercising his constitutional powers of eminent domain.

Iraq was a blighted area. Even though it was a sovereign nation (a detail), it was impoverished (by U.S. sanctions), and governed by a mass-murdering dictator (even though most of the mass murders were decades old).

Iraq was also a public nuisance. It was a haven for terrorists (even though not proven), and stuffed with WMD's (disproven).

Bottom line: there was also a "public purpose" involved - we needed the oil.

Just compensation? Not Bush's problem. Future generations of Americans will foot that bill.

So, in more ways than one - notwithstanding a few troublesome details - Bush can take the 5th Amendment in explaining how he took us into the un-provoked, unnecessary and largely unilateral invasion and occupation of Iraq (UULUIOI)!

Progressive Radio & TV Talk IRV-Based Poll

Mon Apr 04, 2005 at 06:45:27 AM PDT

Progressive Radio & TV Talk IRV-Based Poll (Phase II)

I ran this poll Saturday but only tallied seven ballots.

I was curious how an Instant Runoff Vote (IRV) selection of liberal talk show hosts (radio & TV) would turn out if limited to KOS members. Also, since I catch very little TV, I have also wondered how the popularity of progressive radio stacks up to liberal TV. Hence, this poll in last Saturday's Diary.

What Is The Data of Saddam's Mass Murders?

Sat Jan 29, 2005 at 09:30:56 AM PDT

I have been provoked to offer this Diary by an excellent Diary by Sirocco today

I think one of the most un-asked or under-asked questions has to do with the seemingly seamlessness of Saddam's record wanton mass violence.

Shock and Awe (Take a Poll) Dealing with Unsustainable Casualties in the Indian Ocean & Iraqi De

Thu Dec 30, 2004 at 06:34:51 AM PDT

How do we experience the death of 80,000 people at a single moment, from a single event? How can you grasp such a reality? On a clear, stormless, sunny day, the sparkling blue water off a coast recedes from its shoreline, like a coiled sea monster, and then springs and strikes thousands of innocent sea-level denizens, killing them, destroying their homes, paralyzing their infrastructures, devastating their economies; Tourist and native alike, probably members of most nationalities on our planet? Unfathomable?

How Members of KOS voted (IRV-Poll) on 2008 Candidates

Fri Nov 26, 2004 at 10:07:41 AM PDT

Well, 35 of them, anyways.

Beginning on 7 November and ending on the 18 November, 35 members of Kos each cast Instant Run-off (IRV) ballots in a poll on presidential candidates in 2008. The purpose of the poll was to identify  which candidates Kos members anticipated (at this immediate post-election juncture at least) might emerge in the next three years from Democratic, liberal or progressive ranks to contend in the next presidential election.

My Biggest Complaint about Daily Kos (Take a Poll)

Wed Nov 24, 2004 at 09:21:41 AM PDT

My Biggest Complaint about Daily Kos

My biggest complaint about Daily Kos - and it is not a big one - is the atrocious ad by AMERICABlog.org.

Yes, I'm talking about the "Lipstick on a Pig" ad!!

Now I resent George W Bush, more than any one I know. But this ad is disgusting, revolting, nauseating, repugnant, and otherwise graphically unbecoming to this great site, IMHO.

Cannot this thing be taken down ASAP, if it's voted down?
