MN Senator Dayton Expected to Bow Out

Wed Feb 09, 2005 at 10:26:20 AM PDT

Minnesota Democrat Senator Mark Dayton is expected to bow out of his re-election bid.
It's breaking news on the Minneapolis Star Tribune right now: http://www.startribune.com/stories/587/5231507.html. He is expected to give a press conference in about 15 minutes.

He is in his first term, and would be up for re-election in 2006.

This can only be a good thing. Anyone who read my post about Dayton approximately 4 hours ago (in reference to him endorsing St. Paul Mayor Randy Kelly, who endorsed Bush in '04) can tell why. Dayton is very vulnerable, mostly because he has very little support with his base.

Minneapolis paper exit poll details

Tue Nov 02, 2004 at 02:57:23 PM PDT

The Minneapolis Star Tribune has this information about exit polling on it's website. The polling was done by the National Election Pool - this article just happens to break out the Minnesota details.

http://www.startribune.com/stories/587/5065212.html

They interviewed 1069 Minnesota voters this morning (no exact times). They are from all over Minnesota, with about 1/3 in the metro area of Minneapolis/St. Paul, about 1/4 in the suburban areas, and the rest in Greater Minnesota.

20% said they were Dems, 33% said they were Reps and 25% were independents. But that only has 78% identifying themselves as anything...

I Voted for John Kerry

Tue Nov 02, 2004 at 06:17:39 AM PDT

This morning, I voted for John Kerry for President of the United States.

I voted Kerry for my aunt, who is called unnatural and immoral for her 10+ year relationship with her partner, and whose wedding I hope to someday celebrate.

I voted Kerry for my husband, who has been laid off, unemployed, and underemployed over the past two years, and who is now changing careers at 25 years old because the tech sector just isn't recovering.

LET'S WORK! 33 HOURS LEFT!

Mon Nov 01, 2004 at 09:07:51 AM PDT

Forget sleep. Forget laundry and dishes. Forget your pets, and maybe even your kids (well, not really, but bring them with you!) for the next 33 hours. There is work to be done. We've stepped it into high gear since the caucuses & primaries beginning in January - now let's keep it going for 33 more hours.

Update from Minnesota

Sat Oct 30, 2004 at 09:56:39 PM PDT

I've got a few things out of Minnesota today. (By the way, I noticed that there was already discussion of one of the polls out of MN today, but it's way down on the diaries list and I've got more info.)

First, polling.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune's poll shows Kerry up 49-41 in Minnesota. Here's the link:
http://www.startribune.com/stories/784/5060798.html

However, the St. Paul Pioneer Press' poll (also released today) shows Bush up 48-47 in the state. Here is the link: http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/politics/10058538.htm

Now the Star Tribune has been accused in the past of always favoring the Democrat in their polling. As was noted in the last thread, they called the Mondale-Coleman US Senate race terribly in the final days of 2002.

My gut says it's closer than 8%, but more than 1%. I feel confident that Kerry will win Minnesota by at least 2-3%. Hopefully more!

U of Minnesota Paper Endorses Kerry

Thu Oct 28, 2004 at 02:55:18 PM PDT

It's not the Wall Street Journal, but every bit helps. Plus it's in a swing state.
Here is the article:
http://www.mndaily.com/articles/2004/10/28/10947

There is also a column by Sen. Tom Harkin about why Bush will restart the draft. Has anyone seen this in other college papers?

BREAKING: 11 Iraqi Guardsmen Murdered

Thu Oct 28, 2004 at 06:42:13 AM PDT

Here is the MSNBC story:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6336322/

CNN just reported it, but said it was breaking and they didn't have much details. On the screen, CNN's report said Iraqi guardsmen, but in their verbal announcement they only said "11 guardsmen." I thought to myself that if I had a loved one in the National Guard over there, I would have been scared shitless upon hearing that.

It's not any better that it is Iraqis, but you all know what I'm saying.

Paying for registering Bush voters, not Kerry

Tue Oct 26, 2004 at 11:19:18 PM PDT

http://www.startribune.com/stories/587/5053876.html

In Wednesday's Minneapolis Star Tribune. Canvassers got bonuses for registering Bush voters, but got nothing - and it was implied they'd be fired - for Kerry voters.

Guess which firm it was? Sproul and Associates, the very same firm that is embroiled in the Nevada allegations, along with W. Virginia and Oregon.

Kerry/Clinton rally on CNN RIGHT NOW!

Mon Oct 25, 2004 at 10:15:15 AM PDT

We can use this as a thread to talk about it, but they're talking about how HUGE the rally is and when Kerry & Clinton came out, they had to cut away from their reporter because they said it was so loud that they couldn't hear him and he couldn't hear them!

Clinton looks skinnier, I think...

Minneapolis paper endorses Wetterling & Daly!

Sun Oct 24, 2004 at 08:22:12 AM PDT

http://www.startribune.com/stories/561/5047572.html

Granted, they're the more liberal editorial board of the two. But they are endorsements none the less!

So that's two for Patty Wetterling, who is challenging Mark Kennedy. The St. Paul Pioneer Press endorsed Rep. John Kline over Teresa Daly.

FREEP THIS POLL!

Tue Oct 19, 2004 at 05:16:00 PM PDT

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6092749/

Hardball poll on who you'd vote for. Currently 58% Bush, 42% Kerry.

St. Paul's CONSERVATIVE paper endorses Wetterling!

Mon Oct 18, 2004 at 08:46:57 AM PDT

Patty Wetterling is one of the strongest pick up opportunities in Minnesota (if not THE strongest), and she was endorsed this weekend by the state's CONSERVATIVE newspaper!

Dems take edge in MN new voter registrations

Mon Oct 18, 2004 at 08:21:22 AM PDT

http://www.startribune.com/stories/587/5037408.html

According to today's article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, "tens of thousands" of new voters have been added from predominantly Democratic cities (mainly Minneapolis & St. Paul, some suburbs). This is "nearly twice" the registrations gathered from predominantly Republican areas.

Minneapolis Star Tribune Article on Undecideds

Sat Oct 09, 2004 at 06:24:18 AM PDT

http://www.startribune.com/stories/587/5024043.html

They talked to three undecideds who were looking to last night's debate to make up their minds.

Two of the three decided, and they had decided Kerry. Some interesting comments from the three undecideds after the fold.

BREAKING: Explosions in Egypt

Thu Oct 07, 2004 at 02:52:19 PM PDT

They don't know much, except that three resorts in Egypt have had blasts. Wolf Blitzer used the words "massive casulaties."

23 dead at the first blast... the others are just being reported.

MSNBC: Key Difference Is Between Bush & Cheney

Wed Oct 06, 2004 at 04:57:23 AM PDT

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6173359/

The article refers to the fact that Cheney was well-spoken and calm, whereas Bush was clearly off his game and relied on the repetition of 4 key phrases 456 times.

It also talks about Edwards putting Cheney on the defensive from the start. It quotes Edwards' "a long resume doesn't equal good judgement," and said the Dean comment was Cheney's best jab.

By the way, the poll here still has Edwards leading 65% to 35% on who won the debate. And more than 1 million votes have been cast.

I hosted a Kerry party today [LONG]

Sun Oct 03, 2004 at 09:46:09 PM PDT

I decided in late August to host a Kerry party this weekend. I didn't register it with the campaign because I wasn't raising any money. And I didn't invite any of my political friends (of which I have many, as a government employee). I purposely invited friends and friends of friends who were not very involved, had rarely/never voted, and were swing/undecided voters. I was very upfront about it being a Kerry party, not an "undecided" party. And I told them in the invitation that they wouldn't be asked for money - I just wanted to talk about what they thought were the important issues of the day.

It turned out to be a great experiment. And I'm so excited about the outcomes. More after the break...
